Kindergarten Parents,
This year your child begins our content-based FLES program, or Foreign Language in Elementary School. Our K-8 program begins with 75 minutes a week of instruction in the target language, incrementing in upper grades. Classes are very different from how you or I might have learned a foreign language. Spanish classes focus on communication, primarily oral at this young age. Children are not asked to translate nor to memorize grammar concepts. Rather, vocabulary is acquired through interactive lessons using a variety of different strategies, and children learn about the Spanish culture. From day one your child has participated in classes conducted in Spanish. Emphasis is placed on listening and speaking, allowing students to engage in the type of conversations that might take place in a Spanish speaking country. Our two units are designed to integrate language, culture, and content in an immersion environment throughout the year. Each unit has a cultural focus allowing students to gain awareness of the Spanish-speaking world while working with content that is related to what they are learning in other classes.
For more information about our World Language program, please see our district web page. For Spanish at Sprague, please visit our web page. Here you will find specific information about what your child is learning, details on activities taking place in the classroom, as well as resources that can be used outside of the classroom. We have created a twitter account @SpragueSpanish where pictures from class are posted, in addition to articles about language acquisition and research on learning a new language.

Las Mañanitas is a traditional Mexican
birthday song sung in Mexico and other Spanish speaking countries. We will celebrate birthdays this year by singing this song. |
